Understanding Cataracts

Blur or Dimness

You may find that even with frequent updates to your eyeglass or contact lens prescription, your vision still doesn’t feel sharp or clear.

Faded or Dull Colors

Many people notice that colors begin to look dull or faded, as if everything has a slight “dingy” tint compared to how vibrant it used to appear.

Poor Night Vision

Cataracts can make everyday activities—such as driving at night—much more challenging due to increased glare and reduced clarity.

Halos Around Lights

Cataracts can create bright halos or rings around lights, which is especially noticeable when looking at oncoming headlights at night.

Sensitivity to Bright Light

You may find that bright sunlight feels increasingly uncomfortable, or that glare from reflective surfaces—such as car windshields—appears much more intense than it used to.

How cataracts are diagnosed

how cataracts treated

Cataracts cannot be corrected with glasses or medication. The only effective treatment is cataract surgery, a quick outpatient procedure that replaces the cloudy natural lens with a clear artificial lens called an intraocular lens (IOL). During surgery, your doctor makes a tiny incision, remove the cloudy lens, and places the new lens in its place. Most patients notice clearer vision within just a few days, and the procedure is considered one of the safest and most successful surgeries performed today.
